Sensible / Sensitive
The Anthropocene Project. An Encyclopedia
Sense and sensibility: there’s no need to get unromantic to see that these rarely fit together. What sensitive soul is taken seriously? Too subjective, only usable in art. In general, it seems better for research when the instruments are sensitive and a sensible person is using them. Particle accelerators, nuclear research, world machines: facts, not feelings. Spiders have it easier. They can fly across great distances, although they are blind and deaf and have no wings and, ergo, cannot fly. They spin meters of spider web hanging from trees and swing collectively until the wind carries them where it is dense enough to carry them. They apparently feel the right moment. What about scientists? Or politicians? When do they sense the right moment?
