The flight and displacement experienced as a consequence of the two world wars was virtually constitutive for the field of “Contemporary History” that emerged after 1945. And yet the history of migration in the twentieth century remained a marginal topic for a long time. Historian Norbert Frei explores the reasons for this in his keynote address.
