Pierre Schaeffer: Music in the Age of Technology
Film screening with an introduction by Nathalie Singer
Hosted by musicologist Hans Heinz Stuckenschmidt in 1963, the lecture series Music in the Age of Technology introduced pioneers of electroacoustic music to a Berlin audience. Among the guests were internationally renowned musicians such as John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Pierre Schaeffer, the founder of Musique Concrète. In his lecture, Schaeffer presented an epistemology of listening-knowledge which moved beyond thetraditional European music education method, granting priority to the empirical experiences of the ear. Schaeffer’s lecture is preserved on a rare 16mm film role. Nathalie Singer will give an introduction to the film recordings.
