The Anthropocene Project. An Encyclopedia
Apocalypse now! We’re all gonna die! Deserts, worms, spiders, explosions, atomic mushroom clouds, and poisoned lunar landscapes are the visual material of those skeptical of progress. Instead of unity and world peace on the Blue Planet, they spread scenarios of destruction and fear. But only those who have an escape plan ready should call for the end with their weapons drawn. For example, that some non-human life form or thing survives the whole thing. “We could have done it differently!,” admonishes their apocalyptic narrative, implying we had a choice and control over the end. How can a narrative be found that represents the paradox between the call to action of the Anthropocene and the dimensions not controllable by humanity? We need a non-holistic “we,” not just to prevent the end, but also to tell it in different ways.
