Gilberto Gil, one of the founders of Tropicalia movement, has just released a brand new CD/DVD Eletracústico signaling his return to the music scene after a break of three years due to his high-profile activities as Brazilian Minister of Culture. An even stronger dialogue between acoustic and electronic percussion elements join with ebullient vocals are hallmarks of the historical repertory of his hits from the 1960’s until today.

AfroReggae is one of the most-followed music groups in Brazil and over the world – whether in their favela community in Rio de Janeiro or performing with artist Caetano Veloso on the Piazza del Popolo in Rome before a European audience of more than one hundred thousand. In February 2006 the band opened for the Rolling Stones at a free concert for a million people at Copacabana beach. The show combining music, theater, dance, circus and social insertion is a hit with audiences worldwide – appealing to both traditional and alternative crowds.

Margareth Menezes, the great axé singer, is about to celebrate her 20th year as a performer of Afro-pop-Brazilian sounds. Two decades and twenty international tours later, she comes to Berlin. Daniela Mercury

Daniela Mercury is a phenomenon: in the mid-1990s, she played in Uruguay before a record audience of 280,000 people. As a 15-year-old, she already set Bahia’s nightclubs on fire with her pop song performances. Axé was the name of the successful mixture of Samba and Reggae with the rhythms of the Candomblé drums, typical of the Afro-Brazilian groups at Carneval in Bahia. And Mercury brings the euphoria of Carneval onto the stage: “She whirls across the stage, making Madonna look like a disco mutant with two left feet.” Chicago Sun-Times
