Alanis Obomsawin’s cinematic work is closely linked to her activist commitment to Indigenous causes. “The Children Have to Hear Another Story” became the guiding theme of her educational work.
How can Obomsawin’s films be interpreted against the background of debates about Europe’s colonial heritage and histories of representation in Germany? What can be learned from Obomsawin’s practice in education and outreach in a country whose cultural memory in literature and film is riddled with racist stereotypes? The introduction follows the chronological chapter structure of the exhibition, classifies the films historically and opens up modes of access and questions for the visit.
