From the floating concrete harbors that the Allies stationed in Normandy, to department stores, football stadiums, monuments and churches through to prisons: In The Airstrip elements of the history of the 20th century, the century of architectural modernism, are narrated by static shots of concrete buildings across the world. Few of the buildings are in use. This allows the concrete structures to perform. Concrete is always a medium between the dynamic and the static: It is poured, it flows and it hardens into shapes that can carry something of this dynamic process. Some of the structures depicted in this film can be seen as hinges that intersect complex narratives and histories, bringing together architects, users and political conflicts.
