In Berliner Bürger*stuben. Palimpseste und Geschichten (2020), Annett Gröschner ambles through her adopted home of Berlin and Prenzlauer Berg. In the volume’s collected essays and reportages, she gathers the histories and everyday lives of people and buildings, reflects on change and raises the question of how Berlin can be preserved as an “ark.”
In Asal Dardan’s autobiographically hued collection of essays Betrachtungen einer Barbarin (2021), places also appear as contested territories. The author was raised by her Iranian parents in Germany and their experience of exile shaped her. In an illuminating examination of German society, she embarks on a search for a common language, for bridging the eternal dichotomy of “us” and the “others.”
The evening will be moderated by journalist and editor Miryam Schellbach.
