On the Aesthetics of the Ethnographic Gaze

In 1960s Paris, trans-European, immigrant networks encountered decolonial movements. Based on her memories of the city during this period, Ulrike Ottinger discusses the role played by ethnology in a globalized aesthetics with ethnologists, artists and cultural scientists. Ulrike Ottinger’s artistic work and the aesthetic methods of ethnography are characterized by looking at cultures beyond one’s own. How did aesthetics of the ethnographic gaze react to postcolonial perspectives? And what are the tensions between ethnology, decolonial approaches and art today?
