In the seven-member band Mexrrissey musicians from some of Mexico’s best-known formations have teamed up—including talent from Café Tacvba and Mexican Institute of Sound.
Together they Mexicanize the entire album The Queen Is Dead and other songs by The Smiths and Morrissey— of course with Spanish lyrics. The melancholy boy from Manchester and mariachi trumpets, does that even go together? Very well, in fact, linking up a penchant for stirring romanticism and melodrama with a bleeding heart.
Anushka
Night meets day: Anushka from the time-honored seaside resort of Brighton produce a mix of soul singing and clattering garage-house, as can only be found in the United Kingdom. The music by the beatmaker Max Wheeler and the singer Victoria Port is as raw as it is polished —melodies from a sun-drenched café meet beats from a sweaty basement club dance floor. Wheeler and Port themselves simply call their music “Sound System Songs.”
