Stories from “old Chico,” Brazil’s longest river

Departures and upheavals on the São Francisco River: “velho Chico” (“old Chico”), as it is also known, is Brazil’s longest river, extending from its source in Minas Gerais, through Bahia and Pernambuco, to flow into the Atlantic between Alagoas and Sergipe. Its banks are populated by fishermen who tell melancholy fables, women who explain love spells, and old men who would like to be crocodiles. The five directors’ very different perspectives on the river also tell of Brazil’s history, of the status quo, and of the country’s future.
