imbenge-dreamhouse
An initiative by Nele Ströbel
Thu, May 25–Sun, Jun 4, 2006
From the wasteland of telecommunications, a place of physical communication was born - a place of cultural dialogue. In southern Africa, a handcraft has established itself that makes use of technological rubbish: imbenge. Originally a form of weaving with grass, it now uses telephone cables to produce almost psychedelic patterns. Based on this idea, the Munich-based artist Nele Ströbel asked twelve artists from South Africa, Germany, France and Japan to come together and build a round house - the imbenge dreamhouse - using just this material. The dreamhouse is being built in the foyer of the House of World Cultures for IN TRANSIT - as a symbol of the artistic globalisation of communications.
