The transition from the Holocene to Anthropocene transforms geology into a social science. Geology of the Present mines the stratifications of the planet to date and analyze the new geological era. How can the Earth’s archives of the Anthropocene be made legible?

On coral eras and ice core temporalities: Evidence Ensembles collages a variety of perspectives on the material witnesses to planetary change and their mission for the future. What can be learned from the material and immaterial traces of the first geological phase of the Anthropocene?

The publication Textures of the Anthropocene: Grain Vapor Ray engages with earthly conditions and human imagination in a discursive, trans-historical experiment. Departing from a corpus of historical documents spanning several centuries, scholars, theorists, scientists, and artists have been asked to grapple with the constantly shifting qualities of the particular, fleeting, and energetic, presenting new positions on the textures and forms that knowledge takes on within the Anthropocene.

This exhibition series in paperback format was developed in collaboration with Anna-Sophie Springer and Etienne Turpin for the SYNAPSE curators' network and is published as both paperbacks and web-based open access publications. The series provokes questions about the validity of seeming categorical binaries such as culture and nature, human and non-human, subject and object, book and exhibition.

In the year 1966, a young man named Stewart Brand handed out buttons in San Francisco reading: “Why haven’t we seen a photograph of the whole Earth yet?” Two years later, the NASA photograph of the “blue planet” appeared on the cover of the Whole Earth Catalog, one of the most influential publications of recent decades. It mediated between cyberneticists and hippies, nature romantics and technology geeks, psychedelia and computer culture, and thus triggered defining impulses for the environmentalist movement and the rise of the digital network culture.
