"Take 1 - Towards 'Night and Fog': Alain Resnais" with Marie-José Mondzain, Adrian Rifkin, and Eyal Sivan
Conceived by filmmaker Eyal Sivan, the long-term project “Documentary Moments” elaborates documentary film practice through screenings and encounters with filmmakers who shaped particular moments of the practice’s history. Its initial chapter is an homage to artists who contributed to the renaissance of documentary film in the post-war period: Alain Resnais (b. 1921), Edgar Morin (b. 1921), Marcel Ophuls (b. 1928), and Frederick Wiseman (b. 1930).
A landmark in both documentary practice and the narration of genocide, Alain Resnais’ Nuit et brouillard (Night and Fog) quintessentially demonstrates the use of images to establish an independent authority. Henchman Glance (Chris Marker, FR N.A., 33 min), a recently discovered film based on Nuit et brouillard will be screened as well as Guernica (A. Resnais, R. Hessen, FR 1950, 13 min) and Les statues meurent aussi (A. Resnais & C. Marker, FR 1953, 30 min).
