Gungung Gunarsah
Gungun Gunarsah
was born in 1977 in Bandung. During his studies at UPI Bandung, he was invited to the international gamelan festival in Yogyakarta in 1999 to present his works. Further performances followed in 2000 and 2001. He was a member of the Ensemble “Neue Musik Bandung” that guest-starred at the Donaueschinger music festival in 2004. His compositions are firmly rooted in the Sundanese tradition and focus primarily on the combination of different tuning systems and the resulting tonal effects.
“I don’t know the extent to which tensions in our country are due to ethnicity. But it is true that the different ethnic group tend to separate themselves from one another through their art. This is why the idea of working with composers of different ethnicities or nationalities is so important. We should follow this example in Indonesia.” Gungun Gunarsah
