"Our planning goal is to transform Shanghai into a twenty-first century metropolis. Essential to this concept is our view of the city as a dynamic process in space and time, rather than as a rigid unity. With this in mind, we have set ourselves two goals: all districts must be in a constant state of flux, and new focal points have to be created: new public spaces, entertainment centres, cultural establishments and hotels - laid out as a network of diverse urban intersections. Mobility is the essence of a city. Squares provide an opportunity to take a restful break from movement. They are the intersections of urban culture - beautiful urban spaces in which social and cultural exchanges take place. Squares and successions of squares are what makes a city unforgettable and sensuous." (Diana Agrest & Mario Gendelsonas, Plan for Xu Jia Huei, Shanghai, China)
