In the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juárez, across from El Paso, Texas, the “narcos” – drug lords who have grown rich from smuggling – are heroes of the dominant local popular culture. To the rhythms and accordion sounds of the rural norteño music, musicians living in quasi-feudal employment conditions sing songs of praise to the power and wealth of the bosses – wealth paid for by the lives of thousands each year.
