A road trip to the sources of inspiration of black culture and creativity in America: The author Darius James returns to the US after the death of his father. The estate consists of a collection of masks of the Yoruba religion. This arouses James’s interest, and, in the most unlikely places, he begins encountering manifestations of this faith – the old African gods in new guise, from hypnotic Haitian beats in New York to blues myths in Mississippi, to the voodoo capital, New Orleans.

Darius James is known for his satirical, self-mocking essays, including „Negrophobia: An Urban Parable“, „Voodoo Stew“ oder That's Blaxploitation: Roots of the Baadasssss 'Tude (Rated X by an All'Whyte Jury)
