Lecture and discussion with Eric Tagliacozzo
Landscapes Torn Asunder
Imagining Borders in a Historical Context
Borders have histories, like peoples and states; and the history of western borders is only one of many.
In his lecture, Eric Tagliacozzo examines regional variations of borders and explores why these “lines in space” show up on the world map at various historical junctures: in early modern Europe, the Ottoman Empire, in pre-modern China and the Americas and, especially the relatively recent morphogenesis of Southeast Asian borders. Eric Tagliacozzo, Professor of History at Cornell University, is currently working on his new book, The Longest Journey: Southeast Asians and the Pilgrimage to Mecca.
