Desert Slide
Sitar meets Guitar
Desert Slide is the latest project by the Indian guitar virtuoso Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. A student of Ravi Shankar, he attracted world-wide attention for the first time in 1994 with his Grammy-winning album, performed with Ry Cooder, “A Meeting By The River“.
His interest in Blues slide guitar techniques prompted him to develop his own instrument, called Mohan Veena: a 19-string hybrid of guitar and sitar which is now widely used on the Indian music scene. Its notes have a Bluesy, almost Hawaiian sound. Bhatt is performing with the vocal maestro Anwar Khan and the Rajasthan Gypsy Group Divana, which has been touring successfully around the world for over 25 years now. The mix of the trance-like, upwardly spiraling sounds of the Mohan Veena and the glittering lyrics of the Gypsies is “a meeting of virtuosos, inspired by the expanses of the Thar Desert. Not to be missed!“ (Mojo)
