Dzi Croquettes
D: Raphael Alvarez and Tatiana Issa, BR 2009, 110 min, English subtitles
“Dzi Croquettes“ were a notorious Brazilian dance-theater troupe in the Tropicália movement of the 1970s. The group’s irony, sense of humor and imagination were an affront to the military dictatorship that held power at the time in Brazil. They revolutionized the gay movement around the world and transformed the language of theater and dance of an entire generation. This award-winning documentary skillfully combines effervescent, emphatic contemporary testimonies and original footage to create an impressive portrait of individual freedom within the rigidity of a military dictatorship.

Raphael Alvarez (*1974 in Rio de Janeiro) became a soap opera star as a child. Later, he moved to New York, where he studied acting, theater and directing. Today, he works as a musical dancer on Broadway and – along with Tatiana Issa – as a film director.

Tatiana Issa (* 1974 in São Paulo) grew up in Europe and took to the stage for the first time at the age of seven. She studied acting and languages in Paris and New York and today, she works all over the world as an actress and director. Her first full-length film “Dzi Croquettes”, which she made in collaboration with Raphael Alvarez in 2009, won numerous international awards.
