The Brazilian film industry is booming! In the section "Première Brasil”, the Festival do Rio is screening the best domestic productions of the year. Curated personally by festival director Ilda Santiago, a selection from the previous two years is available for viewing at the HKW.

The program offers a wide range of subjects: from the art of making houses out of garbage, to the fog of the hinterland, to a psychological thriller about deadly neighbors. And a retrospective look at Brazil, ‘the land of the future’ as they called it in the fifties: documentaries about Oscar Niemeyer, Affonso Eduardo Reidy, Lucio Costa, the architects of Rio de Janeiro and the capital Brasilia – ‘a utopia turned reality’, which from today’s perspective seems little more than illusion. Public talks with Ilda Santiago and the directors offer insights into present day Brazil, participants include renowned experts include Marcelo Gomes and Karim Ainouz and promising young talents such as Esmir Filho.
