Sindiwe Magona (South Africa) reads from "Beauty's Gift" and presents poems from "Please, Take Photographs"
In English
With “Beauty’s Gift,” Sindiwe Magona wrote one of the most important South African texts about the HIV/AIDS pandemic. She tells the story of Beauty, who is infected by her unfaithful husband and dies of AIDS within six weeks of her diagnosis. Before she dies she extracts a promise from her friends: to deal frankly and uncompromisingly with the dangers of this disease. The novella is additionally driven by a strong foundation in “Black Feminism,” which calls into discussion the role and degradation of women in a society with patriarchal structures and Apartheid thinking.
