The spry Fjodor Kokoschkin, in his mid-90s, returns from a journey of remembrance through Russia. In 1918 the Bolsheviks had murdered his father, after which he fled via Odessa to Berlin, and from there escaped from the Nazis to Prague, before finally emigrating to the USA. The memories of his eventful life recreate the history of the first half of the 20th century.
