Henry Moore, Large Divided Oval: Butterfly

There will be teatime and music to mark the rededication of Henry Moore’s sculpture “Large Divided Oval: Butterfly.” The bronze, Moore’s last major work, was installed in front of the Congress Hall – now the Haus der Kulturen der Welt – as part of Berlin’s 750th anniversary celebration in 1987.

“There is a right physical size for every idea,” Moore said. And despite its monumental size, the “butterfly” seems to hover over the reflecting pool, forming an indivisible unity with the building behind it and the landscape ensemble of the park. The sculpture has been admired by millions of visitors to the site. It is now being fully overhauled, newly coated and polished at Berlin’s Noack foundry, with whom Moore worked closely for many years. André Schmitz, Berlin’s state secretary for culture, and Richard Calvocoressi, director of the Henry Moore Foundation in Britain, will be among the speakers at the rededication ceremony.
