The concept of multiculturalism, either as a theoretical concept or polemical formula, has long framed the debate on the immigrant society, which, accordingly, is understood as a tolerant yet detached form of coexistence.

Now the focus of the discussion is shifting to “parallel societies.” In his new book Interkultur, the psychologist and migration researcher Mark Terkessidis makes the case for a radical intercultural opening-up that would engender true interaction between social groups. He holds that, across the board, institutions must be challenged to offer equal access to all people, irrespective of their background. Only in this way, he argues, can the potential inherent in a diverse society be brought to bear fruit.
