Forró Big Band Style
Here in Germany, Jorge de Altinho – wrongly – remains one of the least known stars of Brazilian music. And yet Jorge, who comes from Altinho in the north-eastern state of Pernambucco, has been performing for nearly 30 years now, when he founded his first carnival band. Since then, many famous musicians have recorded his songs. What's more, he has broadened Forró's instrumentation to create more of a big band sound. Trumpets, saxophone, and guitar accelerate the drive of his songs, which are about the daily lives of the the Nordestinos, pushing them beyond their customary high speed. You can tell immediately that Lambada stems from Forró. And the fact that Forró has been regularly hitting the top of the national charts this century is largely thanks to Jorge de Altinho.

Accordion and Girlie Forró
Forró is apparently the abbreviation for “forrobodó”, which roughly means the dance of the rabble. Traditionally, Forró has been – or rather was – a men's affair. But now, in the form of Clan Brasil, four very young women have succeeded in conquering the country's biggest stages with their very own interpretations of this raw dance music from north-eastern Brazil. The Brazilian women's clan from Paraiba plays original Forró instruments: the sanfona accordion, the zabumba bass-drum, the triangle, enriched by the strains of the violin and the flute. Together, they give the Pè de Serra Forró – Forró from the 'foot of the mountains” – a soft, open, good-mood sound. Tours have taken the quartet to Portugal, Italy and the USA. Now they can be heard in Berlin for the first time.
