Ti Coca + Wanga Négès (Haiti)
Seductive Troubadours
Music from the Vodun repertoire: The singer Ti Coca invokes the spirit of the sea, the serpent god or Baron Samedi, the god of death. Then he becomes a Creole version of the suave voiced Georges Brassens, singing a twoubadou repertoire reminiscent of the French troubadours. And when Allen Juste joins in with his accordion, they swing into action with dances stemming from the quadrille and Capoeira, a martial arts inflected dance from the Bantu of Mozambique. The band from Port-au-Prince has a mission with its earthy music: "Wanga Négès," which means mystical bird, symbol of seduction.

René Lacaille (Réunion)
Volcanic Virtuoso
He created "Electric Maloya:" the modern form of Reunion-Blues, a mélange of African and Indian roots, flavored with French Musette and topped with Creole echoes from Madagascar. A versatile musician, Lacaille masters the accordion and numerous instruments and plays Séga, whose name means “roll up your sleeves.” Rene Lacaille’s career has taken him all the way to Paris and back. He has played with Manu Dibango and the Colombian Salsa master Yuri Buenaventura, but always he returns to the roots of his volcanic homeland. Le Quotidien writes about Réunion: "Accordéo-mystique finesse."
