What is specific about contemporary visual culture? What fault lines and continuities shape current practices of moving images? What aesthetic, social and political issues are artists and filmmakers grappling with today? The Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin traces unique features and convergences of new cinema and contemporary art, investigating new cinematic practices and critical approaches.
The event presents a selection of 128 works from 43 countries – most of them in German premieres –, including experimental documentaries and fictions, videos, hybrid forms and multimedia works by internationally renowned alongside young artists.
After the Paris edition at the Louvre auditorium, Centre Pompidou and Beaux-Arts de Paris in May 2022, the whole program will be deployed in the auditorium of the HKW.
Among the 20 screening sessions presented this year, the program includes works by Rosa Barba, George Drivas, Dora Garcia, Tamar Guimaraes, Cécile Hartmann, Salomé Lamas, Natacha Nisic, Leighton Pierce, Laure Prouvost, Rajee Samarasinghe, John Smith, Wendelien van Oldenborgh and many others. Screening sessions and artist talks on site will be streamed live.
Each day in the early afternoon, temporary exhibitions will invite the public to an immersive experience in the auditorium. The public will also have the opportunity to explore the hybrid spaces of virtual reality works, with a special selection of 11 pieces brought together under the title Collages and Utopia. It includes The Subterranean Imprint Archive by Francois Knoetze and Amy Louise Wilson, a research project about contemporary resource extraction strategies and technopolitics legacy.
