Ashraf Kateb POP & Friends
Ashraf Kateb is not only a virtuoso on the violin; he’s also a versatile musical catalyst. He shared a stage with Leonard Bernstein, worked with the indie band Die Braut haut ins Auge, and recorded the legendary album Gesture with compositions from Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, and Morocco with Gaswan Zerikly. For his performance at HKW, he’s bringing Reem al Ghabra (vocals), George Saade (percussion), and Mohamad Fityan (flute) on stage to reinterpret Arabic pop songs with them.
Alaa Zouiten
Alaa Zouiten describes himself as a “transcultural being.” On the oud he combines music traditions from the Maghreb and Andalusia with jazz and even Bach. In the blend of sophisticated composition and free improvisation, Zouiten’s playing can also be understood as conveying the music of pioneering oud masters such as Munir Baschir, Saïd Chraïbi, or Farid el Atrache as it renews traditional fusion concepts. The result? A plaisir transculturel shared by the musician and the audience.
