Damouré, Lam and Illo travel from their village of Ayorou in Niger to Paris in the late 1960s to study its inhabitants and their ways of life. They are particularly interested in the city’s high-rises as supposed symbols of progress. Director Jean Rouch reverses traditional relationships between Africa and the West and manages to critically question both the brutality of colonial anthropology and Western ideas of progress in a humorous way.
