Mario Lucio’s musical journey along former slave routes | Multilayered portrait of an icon of African independence struggles
Kreol
D: Frédérique Menant, FR 2010, 52 min., English version (in English, French, Portuguese with English subtitles)
Mario Lucio is a musician, poet and politician. The film accompanies him in 2010 on a musical journey along the old slave routes, from Cape Verde via Cuba to Europe. Lucio’s album Kreol was created from his encounters with local musicians.
Amílcar Cabral
D: Ana Ramos Lisboa, 2001, BF, CV, PT 60 min., Portuguese OV with English subtitles
An icon of African history: Until his assassination in 1973, the agricultural engineer and poet Amílcar Cabral was a central figure in Guinea-Bissau’s and Cape Verde’s decolonial struggle against Portugal. The film is a multi-layered portrait from archival material and conversations with family and fellow combatants.
