Dur-Dur Band International
A diverse music scene pulsated in the dance halls of Mogadishu, the port and capital of Somalia, in the 1970s and 1980s. Groups like the Dur-Dur Band blended influences from the regions surrounding the Indian Ocean with pre-colonial musical practices and American pop. But the civil war put an end to cultural life; most creatives fled into exile. Today, only the audiotapes from the radio archives in Mogadishu and Hargeysa – saved from the war years and the music ban – testify to this rich musical heritage. Compilations like the Grammy-nominated Sweet as Broken Dates: Lost Somali Tapes from the Horn of Africa exported the hits by the Dur-Dur Band and others from the archives to the world. The super group Dur-Dur Band International brings together the musicians now dispersed in the diaspora and some of the greatest voices of Somalia’s golden era to rekindle that spirit.
