London Is The Place For Me

June 1948, right after the Empire Windrush docks at Tilbury, near London: Aldwyn Roberts aka Lord Kitchener, a calypso star from Trinidad, sings, “London is the place for me…” into a reporter’s microphone—an iconic moment in British music history.
The influence of the Afro-Caribbean diaspora on British pop culture to this day will be discussed by the ethnomusicologist and social anthropologist Tina K. Ramnarine, the musician and director of the Black Music Research Unit Mykaell Riley, and the poet and musician Anthony Joseph, moderated by the music journalist Jacqueline Springer.
To start, Joseph will read from his recently published book Kitch: A Fictional Biography of a Calypso Icon.
