From rap and dub to blues: The guitarist Skip “Little Axe” McDonald and the bassist Doug Wimbish were part of the house band of Sugar Hill Records as early as the beginning of the 1980s and can be heard on hiphop milestones such as The Message.
In 1984 they moved to London with their band project Tackhead to investigate dub and electronics with the producer Adrian Sherwood. Since 1993 they have been applying their findings to the blues, now under the name Little Axe.
Eva Lazarus
Eva Lazarus has internalized the bass culture ethos of her hometown Bristol like hardly any other British MC of her time. She can be heard on drum’n’bass tracks as well as ragga riddims: Lazarus is the front woman of the band Dub Mafia, but she has also contributed her voice and lyrics to tracks by Zed Bias, the hip-hop constructs of DJ Vadim, and the neo-dancehall productions of her friends Mungo’s Hi Fi. All the while she fluidly switches from soul singing to rap punchlines.
