Matthew Herbert’s Brexit Big Band | Go-Kart Mozart
7 pm Go-Kart Mozart
8.30 pm Matthew Herbert’s Brexit Big Band
10 pm Fish Tank (film)
The soundtrack to separation: As a reaction to the UK's approaching exit from the European Union, the British DJ, sound researcher, and producer Matthew Herbert set up the Brexit Big Band.
In its concerts, a mix of orchestral drama, disco, jazz, and a lot of fun, the troupe takes the stage with local musicians—at HKW with the Chor der Kulturen der Welt. In the turbulent but danceable performance cellos get set on fire and Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union gets set to music.
Go-Kart Mozart
An eye for detail: The passionate refuser Lawrence stands alongside other British songwriting mavericks such as Momus or Julian Cope—only that he is considered an undiscovered genius, since he started dodging big success over and over again in the 1980s with the indie band Felt. For 20 years now, Lawrence has been writing small meta-glampop pearls for his band Go-Kart Mozart, on topics such as cauliflower and tampon adverts. Behind the pop-dadaism Lawrence turns out to be a keen observer disguised as a charmingly eccentric figure.
