Multilayered drama about the pitfalls of modernity in Brazil
The 65-year-old Clara lives in the Aquarius, an old apartment house on Recife’s city beach in Brazil. Real estate speculators threaten her home, all the other apartments have already been sold. Clara, played by the great Sonia Braga, takes up the fight against the unscrupulous company. As in Neighbouring Sounds (2012) Mendonça Filho has succeeded in creating a multilayered and highly topical drama about the dignity of the individual, social responsibility, and the politically legitimated greed for profit.
