D: Volker Schaner, Ethiopia / Germany / United Kingdom / Jamaica / Switzerland 2015, 97 min, OV with German subtitles
Insight into the universe of this eccentric pioneer of dub
The Upsetter: Lee “Scratch” Perry is considered the inventor of dub. Filmmaker Volker Schaner accompanied the eccentric artist for fifteen years, to London, Ethiopia, Jamaica, and to a Swiss mountain town. He gains insights into the artist’s metaphysical universe, with the master’s own words on his struggle of “good over evil,” visits to the Black Ark Studio, where the legendary recordings with Bob Marley were made, psychedelic animation sequences, and interviews with musicians like Ashley Beedle, Adrian Sherwood, and The Orb.
