Mundo grúa (Crane World)
D: Pablo Trapero, ARG 1999, 90 min, English subtitles
Fifty-something Rulo, a former member of a moderately well known rock band, now has a portly belly and keeps his head above water with odd jobs in Buenos Aires. With the help of his friend Torres, he wants to become a crane operator. But when the crane job falls through, Rulo is forced to take on work as a bulldozer operator in far-away Patagonia...
In his internationally acclaimed debut, Pablo Trapero works with amateur actors who lend the fictional plot empathetic depth. With its crystal-clear look at a man’s soul, the worker’s story shot in black and white recalls, for instance, Aki Kaurismäki’s early works.
“Mundo grúa is neo-neorealism in its purest form, an intense hybrid of documentary and fiction.” Alan Pauls
