Los salvajes (The Wild Ones)
D: Alejandro Fadel, ARG 2012, 119 min, English subtitles
Five teenagers escape from a penal institution. They hunt and rob to survive on their march through the rugged hinterland, take drugs, fight and love each other. Fragility and violence take on an archaic, even harmonious nature…
On a small budget and with impressive amateur actors, in his directorial debut screenwriter Fadel (who wrote for Pablo Trapero and Walter Salles) creates an existential drama of raw beauty, with brilliant sound design and captivating cinematography full of references to the likes of Carl Theodor Dreyer, Carlos Reygadas and Terrence Malick. Presented at Cannes 2012, Semaine de la critique.
“Fadel tears New Argentine Cinema from its urban comforts and mercilessly transplants it in a rough and brutal rural setting.” Alan Pauls
