Critic and journalist Heloisa Buarque de Hollanda thinks the idea that Brazil is a “racial democracy”, an open, integrative country, is a huge national myth. It conceals a reality of social inequality, racism, and prejudices. But since the late 1980s, she makes out new developments of artistic production on the margins of society. They provide new impulses for Brazil’s culture, arising precisely from the debate about ethnic and class issues.
