Angola experienced its first pop-music flowering in the 1970s. Bands like Os Bongos, Jovens do Prenda and Africa Show combined imports from Congo and Latin America with homegrown idioms such as rebita, kazukuta and semba. Countless songs were written and recorded against the backdrop of the country’s civil war: hypnotically grooving music of timeless beauty – yet ephemeral when it came to the recording medium used. The well-traveled vinyl conservator Samy Ben Redjeb and his like-minded associate, the activist Otiniel Silva, have put together an all-star band made up of veteran musicians from those years.
