Vera Sala (São Paulo)

A body trapped in wire: ImPermanências works with the idea that the body is subject to constant change and renewal. The seemingly endless wire loops not only envelop the performer but also support her and protect her from falling as well as from ruin.

Vera Sala's works interpret the human body as a process that is constantly on the move. Through her work as a dancer and choreographer, she raises questions about central themes like insecurity, humiliation, disfigurement and the loss of boundaries between the interior and exterior of the body. Vera Sala is professor of communication and art at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo. In 1998, she was awarded the Mambembe Preis for her performances, and in 1999 she received the São Paulo Critics Association Award, for her research on dance.

The works of Porta das Mãos, ImPermanências and O Banho are conceived as living installations. Visitors can move from one “exhibit” to the next, just as they would in an exhibition.
