The district of Bixiga, São Paulo’s hotspot, is both the birthplace and the source of the name for this ten-piece instrumental big band. Creatively building on their musical basis in seventies Funk, avant-garde Pop, Jazz and Dub, they add Afrobeat, Malinké, Samba and Cumbia as required.
The number in their name is both an indication of their retro leanings and a reference to Fela Kuti’s Africa 70. With their debut album Bixiga 70 they have already made it onto the “Best of the Year” lists of the Brazilian editions of “Rolling Stone” and MTV, going on to share the stage with masters of the Afrobeat scene such as Tony Allen or Seun Kuti. During Copa da Cultura 2.0 they will turn the HKW roof terrace into a Berlin outpost of the paulistas’ party district…
