Concerts on the roof terrace, in case of rain in the exhibition hall
The HKW is showing all World Cup matches on a big screen, with more than 1,000 all-weather seats, expert analysis of selected matches and concerts at the weekends.
Following highly successful programs accompanying the last two soccer World Cups – the “Copa da Cultura” in 2006 with a total of 55,000 spectators and the 2010 “Cup of Cultures”, dedicated to South Africa, the HKW announces a second festival with Brazilian artists. Once again, the HKW is showing all World Cup matches on a big screen, with more than 1,000 all-weather seats, expert analysis of selected matches and concerts at the weekends. COPA DA CULTURA 2.0 promises to bring the whole bandwidth of Brazilian music to the summer open air roof terrace of the HKW: from stars who’ve been wowing the crowds for decades through new discoveries in Europe to home appearances by Berlin-based artists. From electronic dance grooves by Napalma, who have performed at venues and events as diverse as the Cairo opera and the Bushfire Festival in Swaziland, through the impressively warm voice of singer-songwriter Monica Besser, the mixture of afrobeat, candomblé, samba and cumbia put together by the 10-piece instrumental band Bixiga 70 to the oh-so-danceable Da Lata, whose blend of styles culminates in a unique “London tropicalia”.
The musical highlight of the World Cup 2014 is on 7 July with “Mas Que Nada” star Sergio Mendes. He’s been displaying his talent since the 1960s, working with Stevie Wonder, the Black Eyed Peas and Justin Timberlake, among others. Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung put it in a nutshell: “Sergio Mendes mixes bossa, funk and hip hop to create the most exciting cocktail since Caipirinha”.
