Loosely based on Brecht’s question, “Who is the greater criminal: he who robs a bank or he who founds one?” director Jung Yoonsuk does an accounting of far-reaching events in recent Korean history. Five people died in the serial murders of the Chijon family, while the construction mafia caused the deaths of 35 in the collapse of the Seongsu Bridge and 500 in that of the Sampoong building in Seoul. Jung sees these as key figures in a process that, through ruthless profit maximization and neglect of duty, paved the way for today’s South Korea. The film won the BIFF Mecenat Award 2013 for its powerful political statement.

Jung Yoonsuk (*1981): The thematic focus of film work of the director of “Non-Fiction Diary” is the questioning of publicness. His short films “Looking for Him” (2008) and “The Home of Stars” (2010) have been screened at international film festivals. In 2013 he won the BIFF Mecenat Award with “Non-Fiction Diary”.
