Kristoffer Gansing is the new artistic director of transmediale 2012, the 25th edition of the Berlin Media Art festival. Especially in times of crisis, it is important to recognize the productive and renewing potential of interruptions, pauses and other "in/compatibilities" and hence to understand "crisis" as an opportunity to stop and restructure.
What avenues of information and action are opened up by unconventional tactics such as those occupying the interspaces of modern network culture? In the spirit of the unfocused, the non-conformist, the monstrous and the "non-entrepreneurial", the transmediale 2012 presents a broad international program of discussion panels, works of art, video screenings, workshops, publications and interventions.
The two-day symposium in/compatible: systems | publics | aesthetics comprises interdisciplinary panels and artists’ presentations on the problematics and production logic of the incompatible. Appropriately, the exhibition Dark Drives: Uneasy Energies in Technological Times, curated by Jacob Lillemose, presents works of art and cultural practices which are accompanied by feelings of unease and point to the dark side of our technologized lives.
To mark its 25th anniversary, the festival also offers a comprehensive retrospective of Berlin’s unique history of media art and culture. At the same time, the newly-initiated platform reSource for transmedial culture, an open media art laboratory, looks to the future of the trans-local network culture.
