The transmediale 2012 is the 25th edition of the Berlin media art festival and this year it has a new artistic director in Kristoffer Gansing. Especially in times of crisis, it is important to recognize the productive and regenerative potential of interruptions, hiatuses and other “In/Compatibilities” and hence to regard “crises” as a chance for preservation and restructuring. What opportunities for information and action are offered by contrary tactics of the kind that are to be found in niches of modern-day network culture? In a spirit of the blurred, the maverick, the monstrous and the “Un-Entrepreneurial”, transmediale 2012 presents a broad international program of round-table talks, works of art, video screenings, workshops, publications and interventions. The two-day symposium “in/compatible: systems | publics | aesthetics” comprises inter-disciplinary panels and artists’ presentations on the problems and production logic of the incompatible. Fittingly, the exhibition “Dark Drives: Uneasy Energies in Technological Times”, curated by Jacob Lillemose, presents works and practices of art which are accompanied by a sense of unease and which point to the dark side of our highly technologized world. To mark its 25th anniversary, the festival also offers a comprehensive review of Berlin’s unique media art and cultural history. And at the same time we look to the future of trans-local network culture with our newly-launched platform “reSource for transmedial culture”, an open media art laboratory.
