Where is the borderline between rationality and irrationality? The six artists who Valerie Smith is bringing together for her first exhibition at the House of World Cultures explore extreme psychological states that lead to new perceptions of reality at the boundaries of logic.
Brazilian artist Arthur Bispo do Rosário (1911-1989) and the Chilean Juan Downey (1940-1993) are the central historical figures in this show. It also includes a video installation by the Polish artist Pawel Althamer, a double-projection installation by François Bucher (Berlin/Medellin), a work by the German concept artist Hanne Darboven and a video production by Javier Téllez (Venezuela/USA). In a commissioned work for the House of World Cultures, Javier Téllez teamed up with psychiatric patients from the Vivantes Clinic Neukölln to film his version of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari in front of the expressionist Einstein Tower in Potsdam. Our film programme offers a glimpse into the light and shadow of the psyche.
