bio Rudd
Roswell Rudd - a living legend as a jazz trombonist - is as well known for his “classical” mastery of his instrument as for his openness to new styles. In his forty-year career, Rudd has worked with pioneering musicians such as Carla Bley, Archie Shepp, Cecil Taylor and Steve Lacy. In the 1960s he gained cult status with his jazz operas Blues for Planet Earth and Gold Rush. In 2003 and 2005 the Jazz Journalists’ Association voted him trombonist of the year. Rudd began working on his MALIcool project when he travelled to Mali. This culminated in the eponymous CD, which met with a rapturous reception in the press: ‘Harmonic Heaven’ (Times Herald Review), ‘Haunting Beauty’ (Jazz Review), ‘Rare Sensitivity’ (All About Jazz: New York).
